PBL Jigsaw Day 1: What is project based learning?
Project Based Learning allows students to work in groups to solve authentic, curriculum-based, global problems.
They decide how to approach the problem and the activities they will do to solve the problem. At the end of the project, students establish the assessment criteria of their project. Teachers take the role of advisors. PBL is designed to put students into a students-as-workers setting where they learn collaboration, critical thinking, written and oral communication and the values of the work ethic while meeting state or national content standards. It is deep, complex, rigorous and integrated.
What are the elements of project based learning? Selecting real world topics - allows for in-depth investigation. It is learning by doing. Research- webquests is a resource with a list of resources. Fundamentals are fourfold: 1. Create teams of three or more students to work on an in-depth project for three to eight weeks. 2. Introduce a complex entry question that establishes a student’s need to know, and scaffold the project with activities and newinformation that deepens the work.
3. Calendar the project through plans, drafts, imely benchmarks, and finally the team’s presentation to an outside panel of experts drawn from parents and the community. 4. Provide timely assessments and/or feed-back on the projects for content, oral and written communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and other important skills.
What are the principles of project based learning?
How to apply? One school's strategy:
To learn collaboration,work in teams.
To learn critical thinking, take on complexproblems.
To learn oral communication, present.
To learn written communication, write.
To learn technology, use technology.
To develop citizenship, take on civicand global issues.
To learn about careers, do internships.
To learn content, research and do all of the above.
PBL gets even stronger when projects and courses fully integrate two or more subjects.
Good projects engage students on their own need to know in tackling complex problems and working in teams to generate solutions, products, and presentations. In every project, they touch all the bases the Partnership for 21st Century Skills considers fundamental outcomes of a successful PBL program. To be successful, learners must obtain feedback and period assessments.
Why should we use project based learning? As with anything, it takes good teachers to make this work, and teachers that will actually take the challenge and do this. New research shows that PBL makes a difference. Globalization is flattening the world and challenging the US as never before. Students in US must move up the value chain and lead a new era of global cooperation as twenty-first-century learners. They need to learn teamwork, critical thinking and communication skills. along with technological tools to become successful citizens and knowledge workers.
